In keeping with its schoolhouse theme, School House Pub is about to give a very adult education to anyone interested in learning how to make certain cocktails.
The Libations 101 series is kicking off on Monday at the Manor Road bar with a focus on wine-based drinks. The focus of the series, which will take place the second Monday of every month, will change each time depending upon seasonality and feedback from the participants.
“In October or November, we were brainstorming events that we could involve the community in more,” Dana Callendar, the bar’s PR representative, said. “We wanted to play off the idea of being in a schoolhouse, so doing classes with an alcohol basis seemed like a good idea. People always want to learn how to make cocktails.”
When the pub held a test run of the class in November (focusing on winter cocktails), she said a lot of people expressed interest in the concept.
“They said they wanted to learn about making martinis, they asked about doing a “Sex and the City” girls night, they wanted to know about different styles of whiskey and gin, things like that,” she said.
The series will be led by Republic National Distilling’s staff barman, Darren Makowsky. He’ll talk about each drink and the history behind it, then demonstrate step-by-step how to make it (but thanks to Texas’ alcohol laws, class participants won’t be able to make any of them themselves). People can then have a taste of each of the cocktails he makes.
The wine-based cocktails Makowsky is crafting on Monday include a New York Sour, mulled wine, sangria and a special red wine reduction drink that Callendar said is being made with vermouth and reduced down.
“We’re really excited to be offering this to the community,” she said. “We hope they go home and show off what they learned.”
