Traditionally, European brewers would time saisons to release in the summer months as a low-ABV antidote to the heat. Now, many craft breweries in the U.S. do as well — including two that have special saison releases this weekend.
Tapping tomorrow at the South Lamar location of the World of Beer franchise is a beer that was brewed in honor of the 25th anniversary of Colorado’s Breckenridge Brewery: Breckenridge Salted Grapefruit Farmhouse Ale.
Doesn’t that sound tasty?
The 5.2 percent ABV dry saison was made with dried grapefruit peel and red Hawaiian sea salt, a tart and briny combination that makes for one refreshing brew during the hottest part of the year. It’ll only be available at the brewery or at select World of Beer locations, including Austin’s, so make sure to order a glass of it when it taps tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Another special saison is launching at Craft Pride: Adelbert’s Whimsical Hibiscus Saison. The first beer of the Austin brewery’s Whimsical rotating series, it was brewed with hibiscus flowers and dry-hopped with Citra hops, imparting it with notes of tropical fruit, citrus and a hint of tartness. And when it debuts at Craft Pride starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, its release will benefit a good cause: Part of the proceeds will go toward the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas.
Adelbert’s Sarah Zomper Haney, who had a big hand in brewing the bright pink saison, felt inspired to donate to the breast cancer support organization after noticing the color of the beer. Helping out this cause is especially important to her, she said on the event’s Facebook page, because her mom is a breast cancer survivor. “I’m so happy to be able to use this beer to give back to such an important cause,” she said.
The Whimsical Hibiscus Saison will initially only be available on draft, but look for bottles of it in a few months.
World of Beer is located at 3121 S. Lamar Blvd., in the mixed-use complex by the Broken Spoke; Craft Pride is at 61 Rainey St.
