Austin Beerworks, Alamo Drafthouse collaborate on tallboy beer release

With a name like “Everybody Wants Some,” Richard Linklater’s newest film releasing in April was just asking for a beer to be named after it. That’s exactly what’s happening with the release of a collaboration brew between two beloved local businesses: Austin Beerworks and the Alamo Drafthouse.

Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some, an easygoing lager that Austin Beerworks head brewer William Golden calls a “dry-hopped Texas Common Beer,” is hitting stores in Austin and in certain Alamo Drafthouse locations in the spring in 16 oz. tallboy cans. The brewery and the theater chain (which has collaborated with other breweries before) decided to create the beer in honor of Linklater, an Austinite and the director of such movie classics as “Dazed and Confused.”

“We like to say ‘Drafthouse’ is in our name for a reason,” Tim League, the Alamo Drafthouse CEO and founder, said in a press release. “Paying tribute to Rick’s latest with a one-of-a-kind beer from one of my favorite breweries? It’s exactly the kind of project that excites us and blurs the line between work and fun.”

“Everybody Wants Some” won’t be entirely unfamiliar to fans of “Dazed and Confused,” the 1993 coming-of-age flick filmed in Austin. According to the press release, the new movie is a comedy set in the world of 1980 college life, following “a group of friends as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.

“In other words, the perfect inspiration for a supremely drinkable canned lager.”

The beer clocks in at an easy-drinking 4.5 percent ABV, which means that like those college friends, you’ll probably want more than one can. The amount of Everybody Wants Some beer, however, will be pretty limited.

“Everybody Wants Some is our favorite kind of beer: extremely drinkable while still being interesting,” Golden said in the press release. “A clean, dry finish with small additions of wheat and oats leave behind a hint of body. Saphir and Jaryllo hops provide bright orchard fruit and floral notes.”

Linklater’s latest releases in theaters on April 1. Look for the beer around that time.
