Well, now we know the bar that is replacing the old World of Beer on South Lamar Boulevard.
It’s another watering hole with multiple locations, all in Austin. The sports-loving Lavaca Street Bar recently announced that it’s moving into the mixed-use development space at 3121 S. Lamar Blvd. and opening later this year. Expect all the same elements of the other locations at this one: games, TV screens playing a variety of sports matches, a roster of good beers and spirits, and bites from Chef Ralph Gilmore’s underrated Turf ‘n Surf Po’Boys.
World of Beer, a Tampa-based bar chain that seemed promising with 50 taps and more than 500 bottles, closed earlier this year after being unable to find a following among Austin’s fickle drinkers. But Lavaca Street Bar, owned by locally based FBR Management, might have better luck.
The bar is owned by the same group that has also given new life to bars like Lala’s Little Nugget and Mean Eyed Cat and plans to open a coffee bar, Stonehouse, also on South Lamar Boulevard later this year. It’s being built out of a historic 1900 home that both the city and the state have declared a landmark.
Lavaca Street Bar’s original location at 405 Lavaca St. has been slaking Austinites’ thirst since 1989. The bar opened a second spot at the Domain Northside’s Rock Rose entertainment district earlier this year.
