WhichCraft Beer Store opened its second location in the Mueller area Friday with 32 draft beers in addition to bottles and cans. The new store, WhichCraft Tap Room & Bottle Shop, also offers sandwiches and snacks, coffee and plenty of seating in the hopes of encouraging guests to stay awhile.

Owner Jody Reyes said he didn’t know what to expect for the shop’s first day at 1900 Simond Ave., in between the Italian restaurant L’Oca d’Oro and dessert haven Bribery Bakery, but by noon, he could clearly call it a success. The new WhichCraft had already attracted a variety of customers, including parents with their kids, workers on their laptops and beer fans eager to check out the fresh wall of taps.

WhichCraft Tap Room & Bottle Shop’s hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 8 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays, and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. For more information, visit whichcraftbeerstore.com.

WhichCraft Beer Store’s second location in Mueller opens Friday

A second location of WhichCraft Beer Store is opening at the end of this week. The new store, called the WhichCraft Tap Room & Bottle Shop, will have about 30 beers on tap in addition to the large selection of canned and bottled beers that has made the original shop a prime destination for craft beer lovers.

Announced in February this year, the Mueller location is opening at 1900 Simond Ave. Ste. 200, in a mixed-use development where Bribery Bakery and Italian restaurant L’Oca d’Oro are also located. Owner Jody Reyes had always wanted his bottle shop to include draft beers, but he waited to add them until his first shop had “proven the concept that we can have an extremely craft beer-only retail store,” he said in February.

Now with the tap wall, people are encouraged to stay awhile or fill a growler to take home.

“Yes, there will be seating,” Reyes wrote in a July blog post on the WhichCraft website. “We’ll be creating a coffee program to include espresso, pour overs, and cold brew. We’ll have light snacks and some prepackaged food, or we’ll allow you to bring in your own food. We envision an extension of the community feel you already receive at WhichCraft South Lamar: a place to explore new beers, pick out a few things to take home, participate in a free tasting event, and interact with our knowledgeable staff.”

Plus (perhaps best of all), visitors to the Mueller shop will probably get to see the lovable store mascot Bubba, Reyes’ dog who often accompanies him to the store. Reyes will be acting general manager of his new location, while the first store at 2110 S. Lamar Blvd. will remain in the hands of Tim Vela, the current general manager.

The store at Mueller is planning a tentative opening on Friday with the hours of 8 a.m. through midnight. For more information about WhichCraft, visit whichcraftbeerstore.com.

A new location of the craft beer-focused WhichCraft Beer Store is going to offer much more than bottles and cans to go when it debuts in early summer this year.

Opening in the Mueller area next to Bribery Bakery, the second WhichCraft will have 25 or 30 taps to carry draft beers that aren’t always found in packaged format — as well as an expanded roster of beer tastings, beer and food pairings, and beer education classes that simply aren’t possible at the flagship location on South Lamar Boulevard.

Having a selection of draft beers was always a goal of WhichCraft owner Jody Reyes, who wanted to make sure there was enough demand for a craft beer-only bottle shop before making the leap to anything else.

“The opening of WhichCraft One has been fantastic and has proven the concept that we can have an extremely craft beer-only retail store,” Reyes said. “But we always wanted to have draft because we can do more events, and it gives more people a reason to visit on a regular basis. They get to hang out in more of a community atmosphere… This is the next iteration of helping customers take the next step in their craft beer journey, as I like to say.”

He chose the 1,750 sq. ft. space, in the row of mixed-use businesses beneath the AMLI at Mueller at 1900 Simond Ave., because of the surrounding neighborhood. “I love that area,” he said. “It’s up-and-coming, which means there’s not a ton of things for residents to do. We want it to be a neighborhood hangout for them.”

The second WhichCraft will draw them in, he said, with the continued focus on a curated cans and bottles selection and the new 25 to 30 taps. The store will also have light bites, coffee and seating.

Because of all the packaged beer, Reyes said he’s freed up to offer rarer or more experimental brews on the tap wall.

“We won’t have to tie up half a dozen taps with kind of the standard styles that a lot of bars have to have,” he said. “That’ll let us focus on more exciting stuff.”

Despite the coming changes with the second WhichCraft — which he hopes to open in June — a lot about the store will remain the same, including the beer-loving staff who put together bottle recommendations, mystery bags of beer and other fun things that continually bring in new and returning customers.

“One of the things that I think we get a lot of notoriety for, rightly so, is a great staff: well-trained, very knowledgeable, eager to help and very outgoing,” he said. “That’s something that won’t be different at WhichCraft Two. That kind of outreach and education has been important in helping us build this concept of being a specialty shop.”

Design-wise, he said, the store also won’t change much, although now he’s able to afford a professional architecture and design firm, OPA Design Studio, to bring the second location to life. OPA was the visionary behind Twisted X Brewing and, most recently, Live Oak Brewing, and proprietor Stephen Oliver, Reyes said, “understands the craft beer industry and the experience we’re trying to create.”

For WhichCraft, that’s a simple but irresistible one.

“We’re going to take the best elements of this store and add on a draft and growler business,” Reyes said. “You wouldn’t believe how many times people come in and say, ‘It’s like a candy store in here!’ Which is great. That’s what we’re going for here and at WhichCraft Two as well.”

Events: Off-Centered Film Fest, WhichCraft Anniversary Party and more

As the monthly Liquid calendar proves, there’s typically something booze-related to do every weekend — but this weekend is particularly chock-full of these events and is worth its own round-up to keep ’em all straight.

Off-Centered Film Festival: The 8th annual weekend of film and beer, a collaboration between the Alamo Drafthouse and Dogfish Head Brewery, kicks off on 6 p.m. Thursday with a Rolling Roadshow Beer Party featuring Master Pancake mocking the 1997 romance classic “Titanic.” The film doesn’t start until 8 p.m., giving you plenty of time to relish the beers, which are plenty and all very good, from Austin Beerworks Furry Beagle to Jester King Repose. Plus, you can dunk a booth full of brewers and stuff yourself full of grub from a variety of food trucks.

The Austin Food and Wine Festival: Yes, it’s the big to-do starting Friday night, but if you don’t already have tickets, the festival is sold out. Although both food and wine are in the fest’s name, it leans more heavily toward food, with a few select demos devoted to, this year, wine and spirits specifically. Among them is Whole Foods sommelier Devon Broglie’s “Rosé By Any Other Name” at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Food & Wine Magazine wine editor Ray Isle’s “Texas Two-Sip” at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and Tipsy Texan’s David Alan’s “Rescue the ‘Rita” at 3 p.m. Saturday. Isle’s demo in particular is worth checking out because you’ll be blind-tasting a Texas wine and its more global counterpart to see how the Texas wine industry fares against older wine regions.

On Sunday, ELM Restaurant Group beverage director Craig Collins (who’s crafted the drinks list for local eateries like Arro and the new Italic) will be teaming up with ELM Chef Andrew Curren to showcase Italian wine and food pairings at 1:30 p.m. An 11:15 a.m. demo about rye and rye cocktails, “Ryeopeners” with winemaker and distiller Austin Hope, is also a good bet for Sunday at the Austin Food & Wine Fest. Plus, the grand tasting tent both days will have lots of good bites and sips to try, so come hungry and thirsty.

WhichCraft’s 1st Anniversary Party at Hops & Grain: Toast to many more years to come of WhichCraft, a store devoted entirely to craft beer, with this celebration at Hops & Grain on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. Fork over $15 and you’ll get a commemorative WhichCraft 1st anniversary glass, 6 drink tickets (1 ticket equals a half pour) and a fun afternoon listening to live music. The store’s own Sahara Smith and her band Girl Pilot will be among the live performers.

¡Viva Tequila! Book Signing at Metier: If you’re looking for something a little less party-centric, tequila aficionado and writer Lucinda Hutson will be at Metier Sunday signing her book about Mexico and its beloved agave spirit, complete with tequila cocktail recipes. She’ll be sharing her stories about how the book came to be (it’s a follow-up to her 1995 “Tequila! Cooking with the Spirit of Mexico”) and offering tastes of T1 Tequila and Tequila 512, as well as cocktails including her Sangrita.
